1. What is Vietnam dependent visa?

Vietnam dependent visa is also known as Vietnam family visa. It is symbolized as TT visa for Vietnam. It is a type of visa which allows spouses and children of certain foreigners or spouses and children and parents of Vietnamese citizens to travel to Vietnam for long-term living together.

2. Who are eligible for Vietnam TT visa?

According to the Law No. 51/2019/QH14 dated November 25, 2019 of the National Assembly on amendments to a number of articles of Law on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam, Vietnam dependent visa TT is granted to:

  • parents, spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens;
  • spouses or children under 18 years of age of foreigners issued with LV1, LV2, LS, DT1, DT2, DT3, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LD1 or LD2 visas, of which:
    • LV1 visa – Issued to people who come to work with units affiliated to Vietnam’s Communist Party; the National Assembly, the government, Central Committee of Vietnamese Fatherland Front, the People’s Supreme Court, the People’s Supreme Procuracy, State Audit Agency, Ministries, ministerial agencies, Governmental agencies, the People’s Councils, the People’s Committees of provinces.
    • LV2 visa – Issued to people who come to work with socio-political organizations, social organizations, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
    • LS visa – issued to foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam
    • DT1 visa – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam and contributing capital of VND 100 billion or more or investing in business lines benefitting from investment incentives, in administrative divisions benefitting from investment incentives decided by the Government.
    • DT2 visa – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam and contributing capital of VND 50 billion to less than VND 100 billion or investing in business lines benefitting from investment incentives treatment decided by the Government.
    • DT3 visa – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam and contributing capital of VND 3 billion to less than VND 50 billion.
    • NN1 visa – Issued to Managers of representative offices or projects of international organizations and foreign non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
    • NN2 visa – Issued to heads of representative offices, branches of foreign traders, representative offices of other foreign economic, cultural, professional organizations in Vietnam.
    • DH visa – Issued to people who come to study or serve internship.
    • PV1 visa – Issued to journalists who have permanent residences in Vietnam.
    • LD1 visa – Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam and certified of eligibility for work permit exemption, unless otherwise specified by international agreements to which Vietnam is a signatory.
    • LD2 visa – Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam requiring work permit.

3. Who can sponsor foreign family members to get dependent visa for Vietnam?

Like many other types of Vietnam visa, all foreigners are required to have a sponsor in Vietnam to get a dependent visa. The sponsor must have family relationship with the applicant, it can be a marriage relationship or a child-parent relationship.

Basically, people who are able to sponsor their family relatives for a dependent visa in Vietnam comprise of:

  • Vietnamese citizens;
  • Foreigners who have been issued with Vietnam visa symbolized as mentioned above or corresponding Vietnam temporary residence card and have approval for sponsor of the organization/company for which they are working.

4. Where to get a family visa for Vietnam?

You can get a family visa, or dependent visa for Vietnam at the Vietnam embassy/Consulate general or Vietnam arrival airport if you are outside Vietnam, or convert your current visa to TT visa at the Vietnam Immigration Department in Vietnam if you are inside the country.

5. How to get Vietnam dependent visa?

The procedure to get a family/dependent/spouse visa for Vietnam may vary depending on where you are at time of application, in Vietnam or outside the country.

5.1 How to get dependent visa in Vietnam

This way is also referred to as converting your current visa to a TT visa in Vietnam. It is done by 3 steps as follows:

👉Step 1: Prepare documents for applying for Vietnam TT visa in Vietnam

In this step, the following documents are required:

  • In case the sponsor is a Vietnamese citizen:
    • Form NA5 – Application for issuance of visa, visa extension for foreigners in Vietnam – certified by the Public Security of the Ward/commune where the sponsor’s permanent address is registered;
    • Original passport of the dependent (valid for at least 06 months, having at least 01 blank page and valid Vietnam visa);
    • 02 4x6cm portrait photo of the dependent;
    • Notarized copies of ID Card, family book of the sponsor;
    • Documents proving family relationship, such as marriage certificate, certificate of birth, etc. In case they were issued in foreign countries, they are subject to Vietnam consular legalization and certified translation into Vietnamese.
  • In case the sponsor is a foreigner:
    • Form NA5 Application for issuance of visa, visa extension for foreigners in Vietnam – certified by the organization/company for which the sponsor is working.
    • Original passport of the dependent (valid for at least 06 months, having at least 01 blank page and valid Vietnam visa);
    • Copy of valid passport and valid Vietnam visa/temporary residence card of the sponsor;
    • Documents proving family relationship, such as marriage certificate, certificate of birth, etc. Those documents must be legalized and translated into Vietnam as regulated by laws.
    • Notarized copies of documents of the organization/company for which the sponsor is working, consisting of: Business registration certificate/Investment Certificate/Certificate of establishment of representative office, and Certificate of Seal Template Registration and Certificate of Tax Registration.
    • Letter of introduction stating the person to follow the visa application procedure at the Vietnam Immigration Department.

👉Step 2: Get Vietnam TT Visa stamp

In this step, the sponsor/sponsor’s representative will submit the required documents to one of the following offices:

  • Hanoi immigration office: 44-46 Tran Phu, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi
  • Immigration office in Da Nang: 78 Le Loi, Thach Thang, Hai Chau, Da Nang
  • Immigration office in Ho Chi Minh City: 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City

The submitter then receives a receipt which indicate the date of receiving the result.

And then, on the appointed date, the submitter will visit the immigration office to get the result which is a TT visa stamped on passport of the dependent.

Note: The dependent is not required to leave Vietnam and then come back to the country to activate this type of visa obtained in Vietnam.

5.2 How to get Vietnam TT visa outside Vietnam

In this case, the sponsor and the dependent should follow the 3-step procedure below:

👉Step 1: Prepare documents for applying for Vietnam TT visa approval letter

If the sponsored person is not in Vietnam, the following documents will be required for applying for a TT visa to Vietnam:

  • In case the sponsor is a Vietnamese citizen:
    • Form NA2 – request for pre-clearance of foreigners’ entry into Vietnam – certified by the Public Security of the Ward/commune where the sponsor’s permanent address is registered;
    • Original passport of the dependent (valid for at least 06 months, having at least 01 blank page and valid Vietnam visa);
    • Copy of valid passport of the sponsored person;
    • Notarized copies of ID Card, family book of the sponsor;
    • Documents proving family relationship, such as marriage certificate, certificate of birth, etc. In case they were issued in foreign countries, they are subject to Vietnam consular legalization and certified translation into Vietnamese.
  • In case the sponsor is a foreigner:
    • Form NA2 – request for pre-clearance of foreigners’ entry into Vietnam certified by the organization/company where the sponsor is working. The request should specify the place to pick up TT visa stamp which can be the Vietnam embassy/consulate abroad or Vietnam arrival airport.
    • Copy of valid passport of the sponsored person;
    • Copy of valid passport and Vietnam visa/temporary residence card of the sponsor;
    • Documents proving family relationship, such as marriage certificate, certificate of birth, etc. Those documents must be legalized and translated into Vietnam as regulated by laws.
    • Notarized copies of documents of the organization/company for which the sponsor is working, consisting of: Business registration certificate/Investment Certificate/Certificate of establishment of representative office, and Certificate of Seal Template Registration and Certificate of Tax Registration.
    • Letter of introduction stating the person to follow the visa application procedure at the Vietnam Immigration Department.

👉Step 2: Get TT visa approval letter for Vietnam

This step will be carried out in the same way as step 2 above, but the result will be a TT visa approval letter, not a visa stamp.

The sponsor then needs to send this letter’s scan to the dependent to complete the procedure to get a TT visa for Vietnam.

👉Step 3: Get TT visa for Vietnam

Upon receipt of the scan, the sponsored person will need to prepare:

  • A printout of a scan;
  • A Vietnamese visa application form (also known as Vietnam entry and exit form);
  • 02 4x6cm portrait photos;
  • Original passport (valid for at least 06 months with at least 02 blank pages);

And then he/she will get the TT visa stamped at the place stated in the visa approval letter.
